STENTON: Internship Opportunity

Stenton, one of the earliest, best-preserved and most believable historic houses in Philadelphia, is currently seeking an intern to assist the museum staff with tasks in museum education, public programs, collections management, development, and other administrative duties.  Stenton is administered by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The intern will assist with a range of programmatic and administrative duties, and work closely with the Program Coordinator and Executive Director to implement interpretive and educational programs.  S/he is responsible for assisting with group tours for both adults and students.  S/he will undertake administrative duties, including answering phones, coordinating mailings, handling some correspondence, entering data into the Past Perfect database, and assisting with other educational and curatorial (including horticultural) projects as appropriate. Additionally, s/he will have the opportunity to work with other member sites of Historic Germantown, a consortium of historic sites in Philadelphia’s Historic Northwest; and assist with the History Hunters Youth Reporter program, a national award-winning collaborative educational program serving 1500+ Philadelphia schoolchildren.

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

  1. Interprets Stenton to visitors including providing guided tours through Stenton mansion and grounds
  2. Works with the Program Coordinator on educational and interpretive initiatives and programs
  3. Ensures that special or group tours are adequately staffed
  4. Provides visitor services, including answering phones, greeting visitors, and selling tickets and gift shop items
  5. Enters data into PastPerfect collections and membership database
  6. Coordinates mailings, prepares correspondence
  7. Works with the Curator on collections-related projects
  8. Assists the History Hunters Coordinator with various scheduling tasks and/or assists with guiding educational tours
  9. Provides assistance to Historic Germantown staff with programmatic and other tasks as needed
  10. Other duties as assigned by Stenton staff

REPORTS TO:  Stenton Program Coordinator

EDUCATION AND BACKGROUND

The ideal candidate for this position will be a student pursuing a degree in American history or related field, have an interest in museum education, or public history, have good computer skills, be able to work independently and be highly motivated and enthusiastic.

STATUS:  Unpaid internship:

Hours are negotiable and some flexibility will be needed in order to accommodate groups and other special visits by appointment.

One of Pennsylvania’s most significant early houses, Stenton was completed in 1730 by James Logan, William Penn’s secretary and agent in the Colony.  It was the country house of succeeding generations of the Logan family until the late 19th century.  A National Historic Landmark, Stenton is owned by the City of Philadelphia and has been managed by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since 1899.  It is located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, near the Wayne Junction SEPTA station.  For more information, visit www.stenton.org.
